The 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers has a very different nose to the Aux Thorey, a little more complexity here and less opulence, more black fruit here with blackberry and bilberry, a touch of dark plum. The palate is medium-bodied with a seductive, silky texture; the 60% new oak is seamlessly integrated, but this retains a killer sense of tension on the finish. Controlled power here, controlled power.

By contrast there is excellent size, weight and power to the muscular yet unusually refined flavors thanks to the fine-grained tannins that are dense enough to coat the palate on the impressively long if youthfully austere finale. This too is definitely going to require at least a modicum of patience and reward 12 to 15 years of cellaring.
